Prevent Gastritis

Gastritis is a common disease characterized by an inflammation of the gastric mucosa, the outermost lining of the stomach. This inflammation is the body’s response to any attacks on the stomach’s integrity.  However, its symptoms alone could create a problem in itself. Thus, Resourcefulus gives you this guide on preventing and treating gastritis.

The major causes of gastritis are:

  • Medications like aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Infection caused by the bacterium H. Pylori (Helicobacter pylori)
  • Frequent drinking of alcoholic beverages
  • Severe physical stress like surgery, trauma or burns
  • Autoimmune response
  • Food poisoning
  • Smoking
  • Chronic renal failure

The causative factors above can trigger the body to have inflammatory responses that lead to symptoms of gastritis namely, burning pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite due to feeling of fullness, and blood in the stool (if bleeding gastric ulcer is present).

Gastritis is classified as acute and chronic.  Acute gastritis is a sudden onset of symptoms whereas chronic gastritis occurs gradually and persist for a long period of time. Chronic gastritis is related to Helicobacter pylori.

Gastritis affects an increasing number of people, primarily because of modern lifestyle that often results to neglect of the body’s health.


1. Avoid drinking too much alcohol. If you cannot totally avoid it, make sure to only drink moderately. Alcohol can irritate the stomach’s lining and it is one of the major culprits for gastritis.

2. Instead of eating 2 or 3 large meals per day, eat small meals every 3 hours or so. Also, avoid getting your stomach empty because it becomes more prone to the action of agents that play a role in inflammation.

3. Avoid eating fast foods.

4. Eat in a relaxed manner and chew your food thoroughly.

5. Don’t eat chewing gum. Chewing can stimulate gastric juice release, which can tremendously affect your stomach since no food is being digested.

6.   Avoid foods that can upset the stomach, particularly foods that are heavily seasoned, as well as fried and spicy ones.

7. Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen and other medications that can have side effects on your stomach. Consult your doctor about the possibility of replacing these medications with drugs that are less irritating to the stomach.

8. Maintain a healthy weight. Gastritis is also worsened by obesity just like majority of diseases. So be sure to make exercise and diet parts of your everyday routine.

9. Try to avoid stress. Stress can also aggravate stomach upset.

10. Get rid of factors that can cause gastritis such as drinking coffee or soda.
